Project #2: Soundscape and Artist Statement

Updated: Oct 8, 2022

The inspiration for this project came from one of my initial ideas. I was going for a creepy and unsettling vibe. I wanted to make the listener feel uneasy, to the point that maybe they don’t even enjoy listening to the audio. I feel I did a decent job achieving that sort of vibe.

A lot of critiques that I got were that it made people annoyed and that they didn’t like the changes of types of noises, which may seem like it should make me reconsider my composition, but that’s actually the response I wanted to invoke in people.

One common critique I found, that I totally agree with, is that there are moments where there are gaps that could use some meshing-together. With it being my first time using audition, I definitely struggled with trying to make things exactly the way I wanted them to be. This is where I had to let go of my control and know I wasn’t going to be able to make it exactly how I wanted it to be.

A place where I think I could have improved it is with the moments of silence. I got many critiques on the gaps between sounds and the amount of silence.

Although I meant the silence to be purposeful, I think I could have done a better job making it be purposeful. I could have done this by making less gaps of silence in my piece, and when there is a gap of silence, make it very noticeable and maybe even abrupt to add to the uncomfortable feeling of the soundscape.

Here's the link to my composition!
