Project #3: Artist Statement

Oh my goodness! This project was a doozy for me… a combination of blood, sweat, and tears (yes, literal tears were shed). The beginning of this project was

nothing short of pure frustration for me. My computer started having storage issues right when this project started. The pop quizzes at the beginning of this project took many more hours than they should have because of the technical issues (this is when some tears were

shed)... learning a new software is already frustrating and difficult, my computer having problems made matters way worse. Basically there was no way I would be able to get this project done when my computer wasn’t smoothly running the program and the technology was making things harder. So I made the decision to get a new computer, I was due for one anyways and had just been waiting till this one was on its last leg.

Between the technical issues and ordering a new computer and needing to wait to start the project till it was delivered, this project was already delayed for me. Once I got the new computer and got into things, it went so much better than the pop quizzes did. MAN! Does having good technology make a difference! My programs were all running smoothly and I was actually able to enjoy and learn from this project. I started working and got in the flow but still, animation takes a long time! I have a new appreciation for animators.

I set all my scenes up in Photoshop and did all my animation in After Effects. The most time consuming part of the animation was the mouth movements of the dinosaur. Even though I only had about 5 basic mouth shapes, it was still a lot of work to not only choose the best one for the word being said, but also trying to time it right. The rest of the animation wasn’t tedious and I was able to get creative with having the characters walk and have fun transitions. In Premiere I had so much fun creating all sorts of sound effects and video transitions. Premiere is where I really had a fun time just being able to bring the animation to life and get creative by adding background noises, echos, pitch effects, and much more.

Honestly I’m quite happy with my final product. Although it’s definitely not professional, I think I still made it funny and enjoyable to watch. Overall, I’m really proud of myself for completing this project. With the difficulties I was having, there were times that I was defeated and the project seemed impossible for me to finish. Despite all the frustration, I was still able to learn and have fun! I’m glad I persevered and completed the project. Animation is not something I’m interested in as a focus, but it was such a good learning experience to create an animated video and learn how to put clips together to form a nice little short film.
